Introducing: New PhD Candidate

The RIAS welcomes our new PhD student Debby Esmeé de Vlugt. After completing her BA at University College Roosevelt and her master's degree at University of Oxford, she now returns to Middelburg for her PhD.

Debby Esmeé de Vlugt

Her project will explore the influence of the Black Power movement in the Dutch Caribbean.

Debby Esmeé says: "The city of Middelburg is no stranger to me, and neither is the RIAS. As an undergraduate student, I used to love sitting at the RIAS library to do research for my American history classes. In 2015, my interest in the institute led to a research internship, followed by an honor’s thesis that was supervised by RIAS staff. Now, four years later, I am incredibly happy to be back here to continue studying the United States and its fascinating history. I’m excited to see what the coming four years will bring, but I’m sure it will be full of new insights and lots of new knowledge."
