From 2019 the RIAS will start a new initiative to regularly host visiting scholars from the United States. The Roosevelt Visiting Professorship will provide for two one-month research positions for U.S.-based scholars working in the fields of American history and international relations.
Each awarded Professorship will cover travel and accommodation costs and a small stipend for one month to enable the participant to locate themselves in Middelburg. The participants will be expected to make use of the Institute's archival holdings and library, engage with the Institute's PhD candidates in research seminars, and take part in RIAS events during that period.
Invitations to selected candidates will be sent out by the RIAS directors each academic year. Informal enquiries from those who may be interested in this position are welcomed, and can be sent direct to either Prof. Damian Pargas or Prof. Giles Scott-Smith.
The Roosevelt Visiting Professorship is a follow-up to the Fulbright Distinguished Research Chair, which was located at the Institute from 2006-2018. Through the generous support of the Fulbright Center, the RIAS regularly hosted internationally distinguished scholars from the United States, who used the Institute as a base for research, teaching, and public outreach across Europe. The RIAS would like to thank the Fulbright Center for this excellent and rewarding partnership over the previous 12 years.
