The RIAS library holds over 9,500 volumes of scholarly publications, including published primary sources, periodicals, and monographs. Just over half the collection covers the twentieth-century presidencies. The remainder documents the American political system, foreign policy, civil rights, immigration, methodology, and social issues.

Visitors to the RIAS library can borrow books for a period of four weeks (and renew them by mail, if necessary). Rare editions and primary source books can only be consulted in the reading room. The RIAS cooperates with Inter Library Loan services in the Netherlands.
The RIAS has collected several hundred theses from MA and BA students based on its primary and secondary resources. These theses can be consulted at the RIAS, but not reproduced without consent of the author. A list of theses is available here.
The RIAS subscribes to a range of academic and educational journals on American history, which can be consulted in the library. These include Diplomatic History (1987-); Journal of American History (1951-); Journal of Transatlantic Studies (2011-); and Presidential Studies Quaterly (1987-).
