The RIAS library holds over 9,500 volumes of scholarly publications, including published primary sources, periodicals, and monographs. Just over half the collection covers the twentieth-century presidencies. The remainder documents the American political system, foreign policy, civil rights, immigration, methodology, and social issues.

Visitors to the RIAS library can borrow books for a period of four weeks (and renew them by mail, if necessary). Rare editions and primary source books can only be consulted in the reading room. The RIAS cooperates with Inter Library Loan services in the Netherlands.
The RIAS has access to a range of academic and educational journals on American history, which can be consulted in the library. These include Diplomatic History (1987-2015); Journal of American History (1951-2017); Journal of Transatlantic Studies (2011-); Presidential Studies Quaterly (1987-2015), and Journal of Southern History (1967-2013). As the majority of these are kept off-site, please give advance notice if you plan to consult these.
