Announcement: 3 New PhD Researchers at the RIAS

The RIAS is pleased to announce that three new PhD researchers will join our team, starting in January 2021.

  • Manar Ellethy will be conducting doctoral research on the development of white supremacist post-truth discourses in the Deep South during the 1950s-1960s.
  • Christine Mertens will be analyzing petitions regarding the status of slavery and free blacks in the post-revolutionary Upper South.
  • Marcella Schute will be investigating the African Apprentice Bill of 1858 and efforts by Louisiana to reopen the slave trade.

The new PhDs will be working within the larger research project titled “Racial Democracy: Challenges to Civic Democratic Ideals in American History,” sponsored by the Stichting Praesidium Libertatis at Leiden University and supervised by Damian Pargas.

The RIAS extends a warm welcome to Manar, Christine, and Marcella. We look forward to working with you in the years to come!
