The Amerikanistendag is a student conference organized by the Netherlands American Studies Association (NASA), and serves as a forum for students and recent graduates at the BA, (R)MA, and PhD level to present their research to fellow students and scholars in the Netherlands.

The conference will be held in the beautiful abbey in Middelburg’s historic city center, which also houses the RIAS American Library. The keynote talk will be given by Dr. Mike Schmidli, a recent arrival to The Netherlands and university lecturer at Leiden University. Dr. Schmidli is a specialist in US foreign policy and the author of The Fate of Freedom Elsewhere: Human Rights and US Cold War Policy toward Argentina (Cornell University Press, 2013). For more on Mike Schmidli's research and academic background, see:

The day will also include the award ceremony for the Theodore Roosevelt American History Award, a prestigious prize for the best MA thesis in American history and American studies in the Netherlands.

If you would like to present your research and meet other students and scholars working on similar topics, please join us! We invite papers on any topic related to the USA and/or the Americas writ large. Approaches from all disciplines are welcome: history, literature, cultural studies, economics, political science, law, gender studies, philosophy, etc. Our aims are both to showcase individual work, and to gather current interests and methods from a new generation of American Studies scholars.
