Call for Papers: Amerikanistendag 2020

The RIAS is pleased to announce that it will host the 26th annual Amerikanistendag on Friday, 29 May 2020. The Amerikanistendag is a student conference organized by the Netherlands American Studies Association (NASA), and serves as a forum for students and recent graduates at the BA, (Res)MA, and PhD level to present their research to fellow students and scholars in the Netherlands.

The keynote talk will be given by Katy Hull from the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Dr. Hull is a specialist in 20th-century US history and is particularly interested in human rights, US foreign policy, civil rights, masculinity, and intellectual history. She is currently working on a book manuscript about Americans who sympathized with Italian fascism in the interwar years. For more on Katy Hull’s research and academic background, see:

If you would like to present your research and meet other students and scholars working on similar topics, please join us! We invite papers on any topic related to the USA and/or the Americas writ large. Approaches from all disciplines are welcome: history, literature, cultural studies, economics, political science, law, gender studies, philosophy, etc. Our aims are both to showcase individual work, and to gather current interests and methods from a new generation of American Studies scholars.

Deadlines and procedures:

– Please submit a document with your contact information and an abstract of your presentation (maximum 200 words) on Tuesday, 14 April 2020. This can be sent to:
– Accepted papers will be grouped into thematic sessions; presentations will last 15 minutes.

The day will also include the award ceremony for the Theodore Roosevelt American History Award, a prestigious prize for the best MA thesis in American history and American studies in The Netherlands.
