Call for Papers: PhD Seminar in American History / American Studies, 18-20 November 2018

We invite proposals for the next edition of the RIAS's international PhD seminar. 

With a dedicated staff, a graduate school, an archive, and a library, the Roosvelt Institute for American Studies in Middelburg is one of the primary venues for the study of American history, politics, and culture in continental Europe. Since 2003, the RIAS organized a recurring research seminar on American history and American studies, at which we invite current doctoral students to present their ongoing work.

The RIAS invites proposals for its next seminar, which will run from 18 to 20 November 2018. Postgraduate students at all stages of the PhD are invited to apply, and we welcome papers on any aspect of US history, culture, society, politics, or foreign relations.We welcome proposals that take the form of a research paper (e.g. a thesis chapter), or for papers that give an overview of the PhD project in its entirety.  

Participants will present their paper and contextualize it within their research project in 15 minutes. Each presentation is followed by a group discussion of approximately 45 minutes, providing an opportunity for extensive feedback.

Applicants are invited to submit their proposals, consisting of a 300-word abstract and a CV, no later than Friday, 5 October 2018, to the seminar coordinator, Dr. Dario Fazzi , at Those selected to participate should be prepared to submit a full-length paper (approximately 7,500 words) by Friday, 2 November 2018. Papers will be circulated in advance.
