Paul Brennan is a PhD candidate in American History / American Studies at the RIAS and Leiden University.

He works on late nineteenth and twentieth century transatlantic reformism and intellectual history.  His primary focus is on Progressive Era reformers and intellectuals, and their various ideas on and commitments to municipal, political, economic, and regulatory reform. His PhD project is ´Progressive Continuity within a Rooseveltian Century: Progressive Reformers and the New Deal´, which analyses how surviving Progressive Era reformers assessed the New Deal and, hence, the continuities and discontinuities between the two great American reform movements that surrounded both of the Roosevelt presidencies.

Paul Brennan is originally from Alaska. He received his BA from Queens University Belfast in Modern History in 2014, and completed a Research MA in history in Political Culture and National Identities at Leiden University.
