On 15 May 2025, RIAS PhD candidate Paul Brennan will defend his dissertation, titled “Foreign Yet Domestic Liberties: The Colonial Reformism of the ACLU in the U.S. Empire, 1920–1940,” at Leiden University.

His project shows how the American Civil Liberties Union sought to establish a broad uniformity of civil liberties protections throughout the U.S. empire, as well as the unintended consequences this effort incurred. His project was supervised by Damian Pargas, Giles Scott-Smith, and Dario Fazzi.

The defense will take place at the Academiegebouw, Rapenburg 73, Leiden.
