The European Forum on US History is continuing its seminar series with a new program for the 2026–2027 academic year. With an expanded network of participating European institutions, the Forum brings together scholars from diverse backgrounds and career stages to explore innovative research on US history through global and transnational perspectives.

The new program features ten sessions running from September 2026 through June 2027, with a new group of speakers and a wide range of topics. At a time when academic freedom faces mounting challenges, the Forum strengthens cross-border collaboration, diversifies scholarly voices, and creates opportunities for intellectual exchange, mentoring, and future collaboration.

The Forum cultivates an inclusive space where doctoral students and established scholars engage with new research, exploring how the past illuminates present-day issues. It is one of the few initiatives of its kind in Europe and maintains strong ties with the European American Studies Network (ASN).

This collaborative platform for critical dialogue and interdisciplinary exchange reaffirms our shared commitment to understanding the United States in its full complexity—past and present.

The Opening Session:

Our first session will take place on Monday, 28 September 2026, from 17:00 to 18:30 CEST. Brooke L. Blower (Boston University) will present “Flying for Refuge: Europe’s Unwed Mothers and Birthright Citizenship at the US Border, 1880s–1920s.” Hosted by the American Studies Center at the University of Warsaw, the session will explore the experiences of European unmarried mothers who crossed the US border, examining questions of migration, refuge, citizenship, and the changing relationship between Europe and the United States.
