On Monday, September 8, 2025, at 16:15, Professor Dario Fazzi will deliver his inaugural lecture to mark his appointment as Professor by Special Appointment in Transatlantic Relations and Environmental History at the Roosevelt Institute for American Studies (RIAS) and Leiden University.

In his lecture, entitled “The US on the World: The Socio-Ecological Impacts of America’s Global Ascendancy”, Professor Fazzi explores the far-reaching environmental consequences of the United States’ rise to global power. While scholars have long examined America’s political, military, and cultural influence, this lecture turns to the ecological dimensions of U.S. global ascendancy.

Professor Fazzi invites the audience to engage with the emerging scholarly focus on the “planetary turn” by reconnecting American history with studies on the Anthropocene and, in particular, the “great acceleration”—a period of sweeping environmental and socio-economic change, largely shaped by the United States, beginning in the 1970s.

What have the making of the modern United States and the projection of its power abroad meant for the global environment? How have these processes reshaped human geographies, resource use, and ecological systems across the globe? What role has the U.S. played in driving or responding to energy crises, environmental degradation, and conservation efforts?

By exploring these questions, Professor Fazzi sheds new light on the global socio-ecological consequences of American power in the modern era.

The ceremony will take place at the Lokhorstkerk, Pieterskerkstraat 1, Leiden. Due to limited seating, please register in advance via the following link:
