The RIAS regularly hosts visiting scholars from the United States and beyond. Starting in 2027, the Institute will offer three distinct scholarships:
- Visiting Professorship on the U.S. in the World (reserved for U.S.-based scholars working on the United States’ role, influence, and interactions within the global community)
- Visiting Professorship on Environmental Humanities (reserved for U.S.-based scholars working on environmental themes)
- Visiting Fellowship on U.S. History, Politics, and Society (open to all scholars)
Each appointment is accompanied by a one-time stipend of €6,000 to support travel and living expenses.
Residencies last between four and eight weeks in Middelburg. Participants are expected to make use of the Institute’s archival holdings and library, engage with the Institute’s PhD candidates, and take part in RIAS events during their stay.
Residencies are intended to support the completion of publications and the advancement of research projects or grant proposals, with preference given to work that contributes to the Institute’s educational mission and research agenda.
Applications may be submitted at any time via the online application form. All applications received by 31 October 2025 will be considered for residencies taking place in 2027. The form will request a short summary of the main research project, a brief statement outlining how the residency will be utilized, and a curriculum vitae. Applicants will also be asked to indicate their preferred period of residency.
Invitations to selected candidates will be sent out by the RIAS director by December 2025, following the completion of the review process. Informal inquiries are welcome and can be sent to the RIAS Executive Director, Prof. Damian Pargas (da.pargas@roosevelt.nl).
