The RIAS regrets to announce the departure of our close colleague and Roosevelt Chair of New Diplomatic History, Giles Scott-Smith, who left the institute this summer in order to take on a prestigious new position as Dean of Leiden University College in The Hague.

Giles joined the RIAS in 2002 (when it was still called the Roosevelt Study Center) as a postdoctoral researcher, where he was promoted to tenured senior researcher in 2005. Between 2008 and 2012 he also taught as an Associate Professor at University College Roosevelt, and between 2009 and 2018 he held the Ernst van den Beugel Chair in the Diplomatic History of Atlantic Cooperation since WWII at Leiden University. In 2017 Giles was appointed Academic Director of the RIAS and from 2018 to 2022 he served as the Roosevelt Chair of New Diplomatic History.

The RIAS would not be what it is today without Giles’ tireless efforts during the past twenty years. His numerous publications, conferences, symposia, and archival acquisitions cemented the diplomatic history research profile at our institute.

We extend our warmest wishes to Giles in his new position and look forward to continued cooperation in the years to come!
