On Friday 3 June 2022, the Netherlands American Studies Association (NASA) and the RIAS are very proud to be holding the 27th annual Amerikanistendag in the historic city center of Middelburg.

The Amerikanistendag is a student conference that serves as a forum for students and recent graduates at the BA, (Res)MA, and PhD level to present their research to fellow students and scholars of American history and American studies in the Netherlands. This year’s event will see the presentation of recent compelling research conducted by five students from Dutch universities.

The day will also include the award ceremony for the Theodore Roosevelt American History Award (TRAHA) 2022, a prestigious prize for the best MA thesis in American history and American studies in the Netherlands. The 2022 TRAHA jury, consisting of Damian Pargas (RIAS/UL), Tim Jelfs (RUG), Heleen Blommers (VU), Melanie van der Elsen (TRAHA winner 2021), will announce this year’s winner. The recipient will then have the honor to receive the award itself from the American Consul General Jennifer DeWitt Walsh.

Further highlights of the day include a keynote lecture by Dr. Jessie Morgan-Owens of Leiden University, entitled : “#FreeRenty: Lanier v. Harvard, and the Future of the Photographic Archive,” and a closing roundtable conducted by RIAS Board member and esteemed journalist, Laila Frank, alongside student organization representatives, on the highly topical subject of Women’s Rights and the Culture Wars.
