The Zeeland Archives (Zeeuws Archief) is organizing an Open Day on the 5th of November 2022! The theme of the Open Day is the slave trade. At this Open Day, RIAS Director Damian Pargas will give a lecture on the origins of African slavery in North-America.

Settler colonialism did not initially entail the foundation of an institution like slavery, so what caused this change into a society that is defined by deeply rooted racial slavery?  Why slavery? Why Africans? What role did race play in the development of slavery?

The lecture will be held in Dutch and starts 10.30 AM. Those interested can attend the lecture for free. The Zeeland Archives is located at Hofplein 16, Middelburg.
