In collaboration with Leiden University, the RIAS will host an Una Europa–funded workshop on 26–27 March 2026 in Middelburg, bringing together interdisciplinary scholars to develop a cross-disciplinary syllabus on teaching existential risks in the Anthropocene.
In collaboration with Leiden University, the RIAS is pleased to announce that it will hold a first-of-its-kind workshop on the teaching of existential risks in the Anthropocene. The RIAS will host an interdisciplinary group of scholars including biologists, engineers, historians, and international-relations experts to discuss matters including the changing climate, artificial intelligence, nuclear affairs, and social vulnerability.
The workshop will produce an interdisciplinary syllabus that can be taught across a wide range of degree programmes focused on the novel and potentially catastrophic risks arising from contemporary existence in the Anthropocene. This will equip students with the tools necessary to understand, thrive and survive in a 21st century defined by the experience of human-caused risks to survival.
The workshop is funded by an Una Europa Seed Grant and will take place on 26—27 March 2026 in Middelburg. This event is not open to the public.
This event is organized by Maud Rijks and Rob Cullum.
